Grow by throwing and being thrown In Japan’s modern martial arts, the teacher demonstrates by throwing his or her students, but is rarely seen being thrown. In classical martial arts, while serving as the student’s model by demonstrating the technique and ensuring they are able to feel it is important, teachers also need to have their students apply the techniques to them and throw them to evaluate the student’s technique through feeling it too. Throwing to demonstrate, then being thrown to appreciate the other person’s strengths and weaknesses are important parts of the one process, and through applying the techniques and having them applied to one, nurtures the ability to empathize with other people

現代武道では指導者は門下生を投げて模範を示しますが、投げられることは殆ど見られません。古武道では模範を示して、門下生に技を感じさせることも重要で すが、門下生に技を取得させるために、指導者と直接組み、門下生に技を掛け、指導者を投げさせることにより、門下生の技の感じ取ることも重要です。投げて 模範を示して、投げられて相手の長短を感じ取ることも、一つの循環するプロセスであり、痛みが伴う技をかけたりかけられたりすることで相手との共感も身に つくものです。
